One of the great things that seems to be a shock to many divers, especially from the USA, who come scuba diving Thailand and the surrounding areas is the fact that the Lion fish are not hunted and have not over run the place like they have in the US. Here in many of the top locations in Thailand that makes the diving in Thailand so good is the fact that there are many marine national parks. This means that there is no fishing, touching or even harassing the wildlife. This means that the Lion fish still have natural hunters which keeps them in check. There are so many different types of Lion fish including the very large pacific Lion fish. When diving Phuket and the surrounding islands you will see a lion fish of some description on every singe dive unless you have your eyes closed.
Lion fish are a fish to keep an eye open for as they do have a nasty sting. They are also very attractive to look at too when they open all their fins and spines up which is a warning. However stings normally happen when people dont see them and touch a rock or something else where the lion fish is resting. As these are common here its alway a good thing to see for all students for people who want to learn to dive in Phuket. They do make great photos when in Phuket scuba diving. .
They are notable for their extremely long and separated spines, and have a generally striped appearance, red, brown, orange, yellow, black, maroon, or white.
A Lionfish is any of several species of venomous marine fish in the genera Pterois, Parapterois, Brachypterois, Ebosia or Dendrochirus, of the family Scorpaenidae. The lionfish is also known as the Turkey Fish or Dragon Fish. They are notable for their extremely long and separated spines, and have a generally striped appearance, red, brown, orange, yellow, black, maroon, or white.
The lionfish is native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region of the world, but various species can be found worldwide. Due to a recent introduction, the lionfish has recently been spotted in the warmer coral regions of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Successful breeding of the lionfish in captivity has not been reported.
Size The common lionfish generally reaches a size of 30-35cm. Smaller lionfish (e.g., the Fuzzy Dwarf) are typically the size of a tennis ball (not including fins). There are many types of them that all vary in sizes.
Venom Lionfish have venomous spines that are deadly to their prey, but usually not to humans. If a human is envenomated, that person will experience severe pain and possible headaches and vomiting. A common treatment is soaking the afflicted area in hot water, as very few hospitals carry specific treatments. However, immediate emergency medical treatment is still advised, as some people may be more susceptible to the venom than others.
Feeding Lionfish are voracious predators. When hunting, they corner prey using their large fins and then use their quick reflexes to swallow the prey whole.
Thailand does have some of the best dive sites in the world off the north west coast of Phuket. This is the Similan islands and surin islands. These are best done on a similan liveaboard. These can be from overnight trip or a much longer one which take you to the Surin islands and richelieu rock which is one of the top ten sights in the world. This coupled with all the rest makes Similan islands diving something you will remember for many years to come. Phuket Thailand will leave a lasting impression and be the bench mark for many diving trips to come.
