This temple is most intact temple in Egypt. It was constructed during the Greek__Roman period in Egypt, and dedicated to the falcon_headed god Horus, who was identified by the Greeks as Apollo. The construction of the temple started in 237 B.C, and finished in 180 years.
The temple was dedicated to festival of The Beautiful Union of Horus and his wife Hathor. This festival was very popular in Ancient Egypt, because almost of the feast is outside the temple, and it was very good opportunity for common people to participate.
Later, the temple was accommodated by the Coptic, so many of the reliefs are defaced, and damaged.
The temple has some of the finest reliefs, and inscriptions among the Egyptian temples due to the good preservation of the temple.
